The obituary is probably the most important document used during the funeral or memorial process. The obituary usually serves as the official "death notice" and can be published in local newspapers to notify the public of death. It gives details about the deceased, as well as details about the funeral or memorial services. It is usually one of the first tasks that you must complete.

Writing an obituary does not have to be a stressful process. There are many different resources available to help you. The Internet has a wide range of articles on how to write an obituary as well as a variety of sample obituaries to help you get started.

Generally, there are two types of obituaries. Short and concise obituaries and Longer more detailed obituaries. The short obituary usually contains basic information such as the full name, place of residence, birth and death date. Specifics about funeral and memorial arrangements are also given if the obituary is published in the newspaper.

Longer obituaries contain more detailed biographical information. Examples of information include the following:

  • Birth and Death Date
  • Place of birth and death
  • Cause of death (optional)
  • Schools attended/graduated
  • Military service and jobs held
  • Religious or civil organizations and affiliations
  • Family members

Detailed funeral obituaries can be read at funeral or memorials services, and are often published in funeral or obituary programs which are printed and given out during the viewings or funeral services. These printed programs serve as keepsakes to help remember and cherish the memories of the deceased for years to come.
